I can't find an Alfred Bates born in Great Alne, Warks in the IGI. The re is an Alfred Charles BATE born in 1864 in Alcester, Warks which is c lose to Great Alne (parents Charles & Mary). He could have got his age w rong in 1901 or perhaps his birthplace. There is a Henry BATES born in g reat Alne in 1864 in the IGI. The IGI records are supposed to be compl ete for this area. I have searched the relevant batch number in the IG I and can see no other sign of a BATES being born there in that period. T here is also a John BATE who married Kezia KNIGHT in 1861 nearby but th ey had children in 1865 so that can't be the same John BATE who fathere d Alfread Charles BATES. Looking at the 1851 census for this area I can 't find any likley candidates for the father of Alfred. I can find Kez ia KNIGHT. The only possible John BATE puts his birthplace as Norton, W arks (that is too far away) there is however a Norton near to Great Aln e, just over the border in Worcestershire. The evidence is far from co nclusive - looking at the IGI there are no BATES born in Norton, Worcs i n this period.... I note, interestingly, that his wife Alice comes fr om Frankley in Worcs!covery finds Alfred and Letice BATES in the 1881 census th ough Alfred is born in Great Thorn, Worcs and Alfred is then 22 not the e xpected 20. It is, however, a very good fit! | Bates, Alfred (P100)
